Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many countries are encouraging novels and TV shows, which are based on crime dramas because it attracts more number of audience. The crime dramas consists of a high-level suspense which makes more involvement of viewers. I personally believe that makers should limit such kind of genres which may force people to adapt it.

One of the major reasons why crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more popular is that it contains a high level suspense and some actual stories. This is because, when viewers watch a crime drama, they tend to involve themselves in the story and try to find the culprit on their own. For example, while watching a theft drama, audience tend to solve the case and try to guess the thief. As a result, viewers find crime dramas more interesting and wait for the next episodes.

However, I personally believe that such kind of violent TV shows should not be encouraged too much. This is because, it contains violent stories and somehow forces youngsters to adapt this profession. For instance, if an individual pays too much attention on these genres, they may try to implement this into their real lives. Furthermore, the youngsters may involve in criminal activities due to the indirect guidance from such kind of TV shows. As a result, it may ruin the future of a child and can cause mental issues such as depression.

To conclude, although crime dramas have high number of viewers, I believe it should be restricted to a certain age groups with lesser number of episodes. Therefore, children instead of watching such kind of violent shows, may focus on their education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument that crime dramas 'force' youngsters to adopt criminal professions is a significant over-generalisation that lacks nuanced support. While you provide a clear position, the explanation of why these shows are popular remains somewhat repetitive, focusing primarily on 'suspense' without exploring other factors like the psychological appeal of justice or the complexity of characters. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments are more balanced and supported by more logical, real-world reasoning rather than speculative claims about viewers' behaviour.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. For example, the transition 'As a result' is used twice in close proximity, which makes the flow feel a bit predictable. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as in the phrase 'adapt it' in the introduction, where the antecedent is not immediately obvious. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, using terms like 'culprit', 'genres', and 'implement'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'encouraging novels' is not the correct collocation for the context of popularity, and 'adapt this profession' is used incorrectly to mean 'adopt'. The phrase 'high number of viewers' is functional but basic. To improve, focus on learning collocations (words that naturally go together) and using more precise academic vocabulary to express your opinions, rather than relying on general terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'crime dramas consists', 'audience tend'), article usage (e.g., 'a high-level suspense'), and preposition errors (e.g., 'pays too much attention on'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article consistency will help improve your accuracy.
