Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most of the companies are publishing crime novels and also releasing crime dramas , which is also becoming quite popular among people. It has its both pros and cons to the society.

The prime reason of the popularity of this genre is the dopamine spike as the crime shows and novels give us different kind of thrill that we miss in our daily life. In this mundane life we always miss out the feeling of thrill and excitement and crime genre fills that part in our life. Whether we are reading a book or watching some drama , we are just trying to escape and just having some entertainment. The second reason is curiosity. Whenever people watch these kind of dramas or they are reading some crime novel they get so engaged in it and are always looking forward to know what is gonna happen in the story.

In my personal opinion, these kind of content is a good source of entertainment as I mentioned in the previous paragraph and can be dangerous for the society if someone gets too indulged in these stories. For instance, I recently read a blog about how someone named Ramesh killed his wife with the help of his girlfriend after watching a murder crime series and followed the same path as the hero did in the story.

In conclusion i would say there is no harm if people just consume this kind of content for entertainment but it can be harmful if people get too much invested.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention 'dopamine' and 'curiosity' as reasons, the explanation remains superficial. The personal opinion section is clear but relies on a single, anecdotal example (the story of Ramesh) to support a broad claim about societal danger. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your arguments with more nuanced analysis or broader societal observations rather than relying on a single narrative. The position is consistent, but the depth of exploration is insufficient for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'The second reason is' and 'In my personal opinion' are functional but mechanical. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect sentences and ideas more fluidly. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the general discussion of entertainment and the specific anecdote about Ramesh. Improving the variety of transition signals would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. You use common terms like 'good source of entertainment' and 'mundane life', which are appropriate but not particularly sophisticated. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'dopamine spike' (which is informal) and 'these kind of content' (should be 'this kind of content'). To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to media studies or psychology, and ensure that plural/singular agreement is consistent when using demonstrative pronouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Examples include 'It has its both pros and cons to the society' (awkward phrasing), 'these kind of content is' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'what is gonna happen' (informal contraction). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding informal contractions will help improve your accuracy.
