Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, in many countries, crime novels and crime TV dramas are becoming extremely popular. These books and TV shows are a source of entertainment and intrigue human nature as well. This essay will discuss different perspectives and I will share my own opinion.

Novels, books and TV shows based on crime genre are thrilling and provides suspense which keep audience glued. Many people like the mystery that these topics offer rather than unconventional romantic stories which are far from reality. For example, Majority of K-Pop dramas, Turkish dramas or Indian dramas all offer same kind of love stories among rich and poor people which are not only fictious but aslo have similar themes on repeat mode. This eventually bores the audience and their interest have shifted to other genres specially crime.

In my opinion, crime dramas and novels are very interesting and involves the audience with great curiosity. Although the category of crime is gaining immense popularity among people, it provides with ideas and ways to criminal minds. For example, alot of novels or stories attract pyschopathic minds and contribute to the ideas like mass shootings, kidnapping or other illegal activities. Moreover, watching offensive programs can trigger youngsters that can have a negative impact on the mental health causing adverse affects in the society.

In conclusion, despite the popularity of these novels and dramas, there should be a limit to content that can be shared with public and shown on the Television. People must not be involved with too much negativity that can affect them mentally which leads to a choas in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and a personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the contrast between repetitive romantic dramas and the suspense of crime fiction. However, the development is somewhat limited. The argument regarding the negative influence on 'psychopathic minds' is a significant claim that lacks sufficient supporting evidence or logical depth to reach a higher band. While the position is clear, the supporting points could be more thoroughly explored to demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow could be smoother. For example, the transition between the popularity of crime dramas and the potential negative impact on society is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the overall structure would benefit from more varied linking phrases to improve the logical progression between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'intrigue' (used incorrectly as a verb here) and 'fictious' (spelling error). Other errors include 'alot' (should be 'a lot') and 'choas' (spelling error). While the range is sufficient to communicate the intended meaning, the precision is inconsistent, and the word choice occasionally lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('interest have shifted', 'dramas... provides suspense') and incorrect preposition usage ('provides with ideas'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching the 7.0 band, which requires more frequent error-free sentences and better control over complex structures.
