Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, crime novels and TV crime dramas have become increasingly popular in many countries. It has been attributed to the several reasons such creating suspense, providing information and awareness.

The primary reason of their popularity is their ability to create suspense. These novels and crime novels generally present a story where a crime is committed, and an investigator use different ways to find the criminal or criminals, which keeps their viewers engaged till the end. In addition, it allows viewer to predict the outcome and gives a feeling of investigator, since they are also attempting to solve the case along with the main character of story. Moreover, viewers can experience the crimes from a safe distance.

Another reason why people like crime novels and TV crime dramas is because these stories provide information about different criminals act. These stories often based on real investigations, so the story writers or film makers usually research and study the case thoroughly before presenting it, which may be tough for an ordinary person to conduct this kind of study. So, in a way, crime novels and crime dramas give their views easy access to gain crime knowledge.

I believe that this kind of story can alert their viewers from crimes, that is the one of reasons of their popularity. Their audience being aware by reading and watching about the crimes that would be possible. For example, many movies have been made on child trafficking, which have presented the ways of criminals to influence children by offering chocolates or toys for kidnapping. So, many parents have been aware and taught their children to avoid taking anything from strangers.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that in many countries, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular because these stories offer suspense, information of different criminal's act and awareness to the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and the writer's opinion. The ideas are relevant, particularly the points regarding suspense and educational awareness. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the example of child trafficking is specific, other points, such as the 'investigator' aspect, are slightly repetitive and could be more deeply explored. The position is clear throughout, but the essay would benefit from a more nuanced discussion of why these genres are specifically popular in the modern era compared to other forms of entertainment. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'that is the one of reasons of their popularity'). The flow is generally smooth, but the connection between sentences could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'investigator', 'suspense', and 'child trafficking'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'provide information about different criminals act' (should be 'criminal acts') and 'give their views easy access' (should be 'viewers'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More precise synonyms and varied collocations would improve the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It has been attributed to the several reasons such creating suspense' (missing 'as' and 'to'), 'an investigator use' (subject-verb agreement), and 'audience being aware by reading' (awkward phrasing). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause significant difficulty for the reader. The punctuation is generally correct, and the meaning remains clear. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and articles in complex sentences.
