Student answer (Band 8.0)

Nowadays, crime novels and television crime dramas are becoming increasingly popular in many countries. Although some people believe that this trend may have negative consequences, I believe that these forms of entertainment have become popular because they provide both excitement and intellectual stimulation.

There are several reasons why people are attracted to crime fiction. First and foremost, crime stories are often filled with suspense, unexpected twists and complicated characters, all of which keep audiences engaged. Not only do these stories entertain people, but they also require them to think critically and analyse clues in order to predict the outcome. For example, when watching a detective series, viewers may try to determine either who committed the crime or why it was committed before the final episode.

Another reason is that modern technology has made crime programmes much easier to access. People can now watch their favourite shows whenever they want, whereas in the past they had to wait for a particular programme to be broadcast. As a result, streaming platforms have significantly increased the popularity of this genre.

In my opinion, however, crime fiction is neither entirely beneficial nor entirely harmful. Although some programmes contain disturbing scenes of violence, many well-produced dramas focus more on solving problems than on glorifying criminal behaviour. Provided that people choose appropriate content and watch it in moderation, crime dramas can be both entertaining and educational.

In conclusion, crime novels and television dramas have become increasingly popular because they not only provide suspense and entertainment but also stimulate people's curiosity and analytical abilities. Although excessive exposure to violent content can be problematic, I believe that crime fiction is a valuable form of entertainment as long as it is consumed responsibly.
