Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is no denying that people are reading crime novels and watching crime series and movies more than comedy shows. However, the following paragraphs will further elucidate reasons behind this trend and provide pertinent examples to support this assertion. I firmly opine that this is a beneficial trend for the new generation.

It is widely accepted that every criminal movie ends with a positive conclusion. Even many crimes are projected on big screens to spread awareness about crimes and show how dangerous they are. Books are demanding among readers because the way they present the story brings attention and curiosity to know more. For example, TV shows illustrate a wide range of law and enforcement rules, thus viewers acquire knowledge about their rights and how to deal with crimes. Individuals watch these shows to protect themselves against brutal and illegal activities.

Apart from that, crime novels and shows depict real-life stories and incidents. People who watch criminal series feel a sense of security and maturity. Therefore, in my opinion, real-life criminal activities should not be hidden, but must be exposed. The way producers are making movies shows heart-touching moments and emotions in theatre, so everyone goes to see them and even feels the sound system created in every illegal situation. Crime movies are popular due to the aforementioned reasons and advantages. Moreover, actors' shows reveal the truth behind every crime, such as murder, child abuse and trafficking.

To recapitulate, in my opinion, people should read crime books and movie stories to acquire information about the law, regulations and their rights. They provide a wide range of legal steps we can take in every difficult moment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and the writer's opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the claim that crime shows provide 'knowledge about rights' is a valid point, but it is not fully explored or supported with specific, convincing evidence. The argument that these shows are beneficial is clear, but the reasoning remains repetitive, focusing heavily on 'awareness' without discussing the psychological or entertainment aspects of the genre. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced analysis, such as discussing the escapism or the intellectual challenge of solving mysteries, rather than focusing solely on legal education.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Apart from that', 'Therefore', and 'To recapitulate', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the 'sound system' mentioned in the third paragraph and the overall argument about crime fiction is unclear and slightly confusing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the personal opinion, which helps the reader follow the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'elucidate', 'pertinent', and 'recapitulate'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'Books are demanding among readers' (likely meaning 'in demand') and 'actors' shows reveal the truth'. The phrase 'feels the sound system' is also unnatural in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and refining your word choices will significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'every criminal movie ends' (should be 'crime movie'), 'many crimes are projected' (should be 'many crimes are depicted'), and 'the way they present the story brings attention' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally accurate, but some sentence constructions are clunky. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision.
