Student answer (Band 8.0)
Crime novels and television crime dramas have become increasingly popular in many countries. This popularity can be attributed to people's curiosity about criminal behaviour and their desire to experience suspense and excitement. In my opinion, crime fiction is an enjoyable form of entertainment and can also encourage viewers and readers to think critically about real-world issues.
One reason for the popularity of crime novels and TV dramas is that they create suspense and encourage people to solve mysteries alongside the characters. Readers and viewers are often presented with clues and unexpected developments, which keeps them interested until the end of the story. In addition, crime stories allow people to explore situations that they would normally never experience in their everyday lives. For example, a person who has never encountered a serious crime may still find it fascinating to learn how detectives investigate a case and identify the person responsible.
Another reason is that crime dramas often provide an opportunity to understand human behaviour. They may explore why people commit crimes, how investigators work and how victims and their families are affected. This can make such programmes more meaningful than simple entertainment. For instance, popular detective series often show how a case is solved through careful observation, interviews and the examination of evidence, which can encourage viewers to pay closer attention to details.
Personally, I enjoy crime fiction and television crime dramas, particularly when the plot is realistic and well developed. I find them entertaining because they combine mystery, suspense and unexpected twists. However, I believe that crime programmes should not glorify violence or criminal behaviour, especially when they are watched by younger audiences. When presented responsibly, these stories can be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
In conclusion, crime novels and TV dramas are popular mainly because they provide suspense, curiosity and an opportunity to explore unusual situations and human behaviour. I believe that crime fiction is a positive form of entertainment when it focuses on storytelling and investigation rather than unnecessarily glorifying violence.

The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of detective investigation techniques. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points. The structure is logical and follows a clear progression, meeting all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'Another reason is that', which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow of information is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking, which demonstrates a high level of control over the structure of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic. Phrases like 'criminal behaviour', 'unexpected developments', 'thought-provoking', and 'glorify violence' show a solid command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it is generally functional rather than highly sophisticated or idiomatic. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and clarity throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and relative clauses (e.g., '...situations that they would normally never experience...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of your arguments. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a strong grasp of English syntax. The writing is clear, professional, and demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence.
