Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this era, crime novels and dramas are gaining a huge popularity, in several nations. The suspense and curiosity crime fiction deliver can significantly attract audience's attention and makes this genre popular. Although crime movies alert people about criminal activities, it can have negative consequences on children.

One of the primary reasons why crime novels and TV dramas are famous is that crime dramas are generally have a lot of suspense and people are curios to know who have committed the crime, as a result, they have to watch or read it till the end. This is largely because individuals start making predictions about a criminal and not only does it develop their cognitive skills, but it also enables individuals to stay active and focused. A clear example of this can be seen in a well-known Indian TV program called CID that is running from 18 years and had a huge fan following, who watch it even while eating every day. Therefore, it is evident that people are more into watching mysteries that crime novel and programs can efficiently deliver.

No doubt, by watching or reading criminal activities, people become more attentive and it improves their problem-solving skills. However, it can have negative effects on children's brains. Since children are impulsive and cannot differentiate between right and wrong, they can try recreate criminal scenes that they watch in the TV, which can encourage them to perform unethical activities, such as lying to parents, or stealing money. Additionally, violence activities can significantly stimulate children's brain and they can be experience trauma and anxiety.

To conclude, the reason behind the popularity behind crime fiction is the suspense it builds up throughout the scene. In my opinion, it could sharpen individual's brain, but it can have a severe impact on children.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains the popularity of crime fiction and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cognitive benefits of suspense and the potential negative impact on children. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the point about cognitive skills is supported by an example, the discussion on children is a bit general. To reach a higher band, you could expand on how the 'suspense' specifically functions in modern media or provide more nuanced examples of why children are particularly vulnerable to these specific types of portrayals.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for popularity from the personal opinion regarding negative effects. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the primary reasons', 'Therefore', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the second paragraph ('who watch it even while eating') is a bit informal. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'cognitive skills', 'unethical activities', and 'stimulate'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'gaining a huge popularity' (should be 'gaining huge popularity') and 'violence activities' (should be 'violent activities'). You also use 'curios' instead of the adjective 'curious'. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and you successfully use a range of topic-specific vocabulary to convey your arguments effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and verb forms, such as 'crime dramas are generally have' (should be 'generally have') and 'who have committed' (should be 'who has committed'). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and pluralization, such as 'in the TV' (should be 'on TV') and 'can be experience' (should be 'can experience'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the complexity of the sentence structures shows an attempt to use a wider range of grammar.
