Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, crime novel and television dramas have surged to becoming famous in most countries. I believe that the human mind is fascinated by intriguing shows that tends to probe the intent and psychology behind these crimes hence the reason for their popularity.

These shows have risen to become so popular because the human mind is wired to think like a criminal and imagine worst case scenarios in respect to crime. There is a popular adage that says "one must think like a criminal in order to get a criminal" and one must also be capable of committing crime in order to protect themselves from it. What better way to stay grounded in the knowledge of crime than to read crime novels and see crime drama series.

In my opinion, watching series of drama shows gives an awareness to an extent of how the mind of criminals work in order for you protect yourself. For example, Japan released a movie titled "Money heist" in the year 2021 a top crime drama series, however it was stated that same pattern crime surged in the country because viewers replicated the crime. unfortunately, law enforcements agencies where able to apprehend 80% of same pattern crime.

I also believe that without crime fictions the human minds and intents would be free evil knowledge. Hence an introduction of these has infiltrated the minds of humans which has led to the decrease of human brains in watching documentary relates to research, nature and invention which has adverse effect on the country.

In conclusion, I believe crime novels and television dramas have increased rapidly due to the intent of young people.Additionally I believe a balance and drive Into other novel and movie genre will have a great impact on countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and personal opinion. However, the development is uneven. The argument regarding the 'human mind being wired to think like a criminal' is somewhat abstract and lacks clear supporting evidence. The example of 'Money Heist' is factually incorrect (it is a Spanish series, not Japanese), which weakens the credibility of the argument. While the position is clear, the reasoning in the fourth paragraph—suggesting that crime fiction leads to a decrease in human intelligence—is a significant over-generalisation that lacks logical support. To improve, ensure examples are accurate and arguments are grounded in more realistic, verifiable observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a central focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In conclusion', 'Additionally', and 'For example', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the link between the popularity of crime dramas and the claim that they cause a 'decrease of human brains' is tenuous, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Referencing is mostly clear, though the connection between the 'Money Heist' example and the subsequent point about law enforcement is slightly disjointed. Improving the logical connection between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'intriguing', 'infiltrated', and 'apprehend'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'surged to becoming famous' (should be 'surged in popularity'), 'free evil knowledge' (likely meant 'free from'), and 'documentary relates to' (should be 'documentaries related to'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the errors occasionally draw attention. To reach a higher band, focus on more natural collocations and ensure that less common vocabulary is used with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('shows that tends to', 'law enforcements agencies where able'), and missing articles or incorrect prepositions. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as the lack of a space after the period in 'crime.unfortunately'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures would help improve this score.
