Student answer (Band 8.0)

In many countries, crime novels and television crime dramas are becoming increasingly popular. There are several reasons for this trend, and I believe that these forms of entertainment can be both enjoyable and beneficial when they are produced responsibly.

One major reason for their popularity is that crime stories are exciting and full of suspense. Readers and viewers are often curious to discover who committed a crime, why it happened, and how the police will solve it. Unexpected twists and clues also encourage people to think carefully and make predictions. For example, popular series such as Sherlock keep audiences interested because they can try to solve the mystery before the main character reveals the answer.

Another reason is that crime dramas provide an escape from ordinary life. People can experience danger, mystery and excitement without actually being in a risky situation. Moreover, many modern crime stories deal with important social issues, including corruption, poverty, justice and family problems. Therefore, they can be more than simple entertainment.

In my opinion, I have a positive attitude towards crime fiction and TV crime dramas. I particularly enjoy stories that require logical thinking and attention to detail. They can improve our ability to analyse situations and consider different possibilities. However, I think producers should avoid showing excessive violence or presenting criminals as role models, especially when programmes are watched by younger audiences.

In conclusion, crime novels and TV dramas are popular because they combine suspense, entertainment and psychological interest. I believe they are valuable forms of entertainment as long as crime and violence are presented in a responsible manner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of 'Sherlock'. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the arguments regarding psychological engagement and escapism are logically presented. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points, ensuring the task requirements are met with a balanced and thoughtful perspective. The response is well-structured and maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another reason', and 'Moreover'. The use of referencing is accurate, and the paragraphing is logical and sufficient. The flow of information is natural, and the reader is guided through the arguments without any confusion. The cohesive devices are used flexibly and contribute to the overall clarity of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'suspense', 'corruption', 'logical thinking', and 'psychological interest'. The word choice is generally precise, and there is an awareness of style and collocation. While the vocabulary is effective, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('when they are produced responsibly') and relative clauses ('that require logical thinking'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control of punctuation is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The writer demonstrates a high level of accuracy, with only very occasional minor slips, which is consistent with a strong performance in this criterion.
