Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, more and more people are interested in watching TV crime dramas and reading crime novels. This is largely because, high-level mystery is involved in such genres, which makes people more interested to watch it. Although these dramas have a significant number of viewers, I personally believe that it should not be freely available to every age group, instead it should be limited to certain age groups only.

To begin with, almost every age groups of people are interesting in watching TV crime dramas. This is because of its hidden high-level suspense which is remained unsolved until the episode ends. It does not allow people to skip an episode even for a minute, otherwise they may miss the offender. Moreover, people with curiosity try to solve the case and find the offender even before the characters do so. In addition, to fulfil people's demand, makers try to make more episodes with the same genre.

However, Although these genres are in high demand, I believe that Tv crime dramas should be restricted to a certain age group, it should not be freely available freely to the children. This is because, these episodes show guidance on how to commit a crime and avoid getting caught. Therefore, children with immature minds may try to copy such activities and get involved in a serious problem. This is because, children are not mature to distinguish between a fictional story and a reality. As a result, too much involvement can lead children to mental illness such as depression and can affect their studies.

To conclude, even with high level of public demand, TV crime shows should not be available to watch by everyone. Teenagers can indirectly get influenced and try to copy a fictional story into their real lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and your personal opinion on the matter. You have a clear position, which is maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding children's exposure to crime dramas is mentioned in the third paragraph and then restated in the conclusion without adding new depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported point rather than circling back to the same concept. The ideas are relevant, but the explanation of why these shows are popular could be more nuanced beyond just 'suspense'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link your thoughts. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'This is because' to start multiple sentences within the same paragraph. Additionally, there are some minor issues with punctuation and sentence structure that occasionally disrupt the flow, such as the comma splice in the third paragraph: '...restricted to a certain age group, it should not be freely available...'. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'offender', 'fictional story', and 'suspense'. However, there are instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'high-level mystery is involved' and 'almost every age groups of people are interesting in watching'. The repetition of basic words like 'people' and 'children' limits the range. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations, and pay closer attention to word forms (e.g., using 'interested' instead of 'interesting').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive step. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('every age groups... are interesting'), incorrect word forms ('freely available freely'), and run-on sentences or comma splices. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
