IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, crime novel and TV crime dramas are increasingly popular among people. This is because of high-level suspense involved in them, which people try to solve themselves. Although these kinds of dramas are more popular, I believe that these should not be available to every age group.

To begin with, a significant number of people like to watch TV crime dramas and read crime novels, because these genres contain a mystery that people try to solve on their own. Mystery such as to find an offender, which remains unrevealed until the episode ends. In addition, viewers with a curiosity try to solve the mystery and find the offender, even before characters do. Moreover, due to high demand of public, makers tend to fulfil public's demand and launch more episodes with the same genre. As a result, Tv crime episodes are getting more popular with continue demand of viewers.

However, I believe these genres have negative impact of certain age groups such as teenager, because they may not be enough mature to distinguish between a fiction and a reality. As crime dramas portray a complete guidance on how to commit a crime and how an individual try to avoid getting caught. In addition, a child may try to execute what an episode tells about a crime. Moreover, it has been seen that youngsters who try to imitate such crimes tend to face mental illness results in anxiety, fear and depression. As a result, sometimes such children undergo a counselling by doctors.

In conclusion, although TV crime shows and novels have a significant number of followers, I believe these should be restricted to certain age groups only. Additionally, due to its negative effects, these genres should not be available for children.
