Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and expressing a personal opinion. However, the development is uneven. While the introduction sets up a clear position, the body paragraphs lack depth. The discussion on 'rescue plans' and the mention of Sherlock Holmes are somewhat tangential and not fully linked to why these genres are popular. Furthermore, the essay ends abruptly mid-sentence, which constitutes a significant omission in the conclusion and prevents a full development of the argument. To improve, ensure each point is supported with clear examples and complete your thoughts logically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay uses some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Nevertheless', and 'Furthermore', but their usage is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression is interrupted by the incomplete final sentence. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'the later proposal', which refers back to a complex sentence structure that is not perfectly articulated. The flow of ideas is generally understandable, but the lack of a finished conclusion significantly impacts the overall coherence of the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'making dramas' instead of 'producing dramas' or 'literature form' instead of 'literary form'. The phrase 'the later proposal' is also slightly misused in this context. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'cyber bulling' (spelled 'bullying') and 'phishing', the range is limited. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring accurate word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The crimes have wreak havoc'), incorrect preposition usage, and punctuation errors. The sentence 'The Sherlock Home, who depicted...' contains a relative pronoun error, as it should refer to the author or the character, not the novel itself. The most significant issue is the incomplete final sentence, which leaves the grammatical structure unfinished. These errors occasionally cause the reader to pause, though they do not completely impede communication.
