Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, across the world, fiction stories based on crime are becoming more and more popular. Based on these stories, the popularity of TV serials and novels is increasing rapidly because it provides readers and viewers thrill in their life. I think even if these kind of entertainment provides good experience, they have bad effects on viewers' mind.

Firstly, source of entertainment like crimes books and TV serials are very much appreciated by their audience. As it has mind bending stories which engages its viewers and keeps them invested in such novels and tv serials. Also, a twists in the stories keeps such content consumers' always thinking about the story line and leaves them with an experience which they cannot forget in their life. For example, popular TV serial; Breaking Bad, was so popular that till now their niche audience keeps discussing regarding its story line. As a result, this show still has millions of viewers every month.

In my point of view, although this category of series gives user a thriller experience, it often encourages some viewers to copy main fiction character's criminal activity. Eventually, it can be resulted in criminal offense. For instance, along with an increase in popularity of a shows like Breaking Bad, the crime they did in drama was also being copied by viewers. Which resulted in increase of crime rate in that same activity which was shown in the show in some countries.

To conclude, even though criminal shows or books based on crime, have purpose to entertain their audience. They often tend to do exactly as their favourite character did in that particular series or drama, which is crime so they tend to face criminal charges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention 'thrill' as a reason for popularity, the explanation remains superficial. Similarly, your opinion regarding the negative effects is stated, but the supporting argument—that viewers copy criminal behavior—is a significant generalization that lacks nuanced evidence or logical depth. To improve, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more detailed reasoning or specific, plausible examples that demonstrate a deeper analysis of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Firstly,' 'Also,' and 'To conclude,' to signal transitions. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as starting a sentence with 'Which resulted in...' or 'As a result, this show...'. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'niche audience,' 'criminal offense,' and 'story line.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'provides readers and viewers thrill' (should be 'provide... with a thrill') and 'gives user a thriller experience' (should be 'thrilling experience'). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of sophisticated vocabulary to express your ideas with greater nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'these kind of entertainment provides') and article usage (e.g., 'a twists in the stories'). Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or incorrectly punctuated, such as 'Which resulted in increase of crime rate...'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and sentence boundary errors.
