IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In many countries, crime novels and television crime dramas are becoming increasingly popular. This trend can be explained by several factors, including people’s curiosity about criminal behaviour, the excitement created by mystery and suspense, and the opportunity to explore complex social issues. In my opinion, crime fiction and TV crime dramas can be highly entertaining and intellectually stimulating, although they should not glorify violence or criminal behaviour.
One major reason for their popularity is the sense of mystery they provide. Most crime stories involve a crime, such as a murder or robbery, followed by an investigation to discover the truth. Readers and viewers often enjoy trying to identify the criminal before the detective does. This creates suspense and encourages the audience to remain engaged until the end. For example, popular detective stories often include unexpected clues and plot twists that make people want to continue reading a novel or watching the next episode.
Another reason is that crime fiction allows people to experience danger and excitement in a safe environment. In real life, most people would not want to become involved in a criminal investigation or witness a violent crime. However, books and television shows allow audiences to experience these situations without facing any actual risk. The combination of fear, suspense and curiosity can therefore make crime dramas particularly exciting.
In my opinion, I enjoy crime fiction and TV crime dramas because they combine entertainment with critical thinking. When I watch a crime drama, I find it interesting to analyse the evidence and try to predict what will happen next. However, producers should be careful not to present criminals as admirable role models or portray violence as entertainment without considering its serious consequences.
In conclusion, crime novels and TV crime dramas are popular mainly because they offer mystery, suspense, excitement and insights into human behaviour and society. I believe that crime fiction is a positive form of entertainment when it is produced responsibly, as it can engage the audience while also encouraging them to think critically about crime and justice.
