IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this contemporary world, crime dramas and novels have became prominent among youngsters. There are multitude of reasons leading to this phenomenon. While it offers may benefits , it also comes with drawbacks.

The predominant reason for the rising viewership of crime-themed shows and novels is their ability to evoke suspense among audiences. To explain, these dramas instill a sense of excitement in individuals of all age groups with crime-packed and thriller scenes which creates an allure to the viewers.

To the positive side, these shows and novels inculcate sense of awareness on the pressing issues by demonstrating the practical solution in pressuring circumstances.Furthermore, they provide a realistic depiction of life by showcasing crime shows based on actual events. A salient example is a T.V show named "Crime Petrol" broadcasted in India for awaring citizens by depicting real life stories.

However, a significant concern lies in the blurred line between fiction and reality, particularly in terms of the violence and actions depicted in these dramas. Nowadays, youngsters try to imitate their role models and they think the action done by them with the influence of the actors can be retrieved as per dramas and movies. However, this can indulge individuals in unlawful activities unknowingly and unwillingly. Additionally, such crime-based dramas and novels have the potential to inspire hardened criminals by offering them new ideas for committing atrocious acts.For instance, a renowned drama "Lupin" based on the story of a thief "Assane Diop" who stole numerous stores and luxury items by getting inspiration and tactics from a novel.

In conclusion, while it is undeniable that fictional crime books and shows can play a role in spreading awareness, the associated drawbacks are considerable. Therefore, it is crucial to provide warnings about the implications of replicating such behaviors in real life to strike a balance between entertainment and reckless imitation.

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'pressing issues,' 'realistic depiction,' and 'hardened criminals.' There are, however, some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'awaring citizens' (should be 'raising awareness among citizens') and 'action done by them' (should be 'actions performed by them'). The phrase 'retrieved as per dramas' is also unnatural. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, these occasional errors in collocation and word form prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'have became' (should be 'have become'), 'offers may benefits' (should be 'offers many benefits'), and 'inculcate sense of awareness' (should be 'inculcate a sense of awareness'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles before singular countable nouns.
