Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have started moving towards crime novels and TV crime dramas. It’s becoming more popular everyday in countries such as India, Canada, Pakistan and South Korea. These books and TV shows are popular as they are filled with suspense, excitment and drama I personally love watching crime movies as it’s based on real life stories from around the world.

Today, a lot of people such as young age people are watching and reading stories based on crime. Firstly, it’s filled with suspense and action, which young people crave for. People are now bored watching love stories and family drama movies. For example, movies such as "The Nun and TV series "Stranger Things" has broken viewership records and they are based on crime dramas.

On the other hand, I personally love watching TV crime dramas as it’s based on real life stories from around the world. They showcase entire storyline from planning to execution. Also, they film how police investigate the case and find the culprit. People could learn from watching it, and protect the community. For example, Netflix saw a 25% hike in viewership for movies based on crime compare to others. Furthermore, TV directors and movie producers are filming new entertainment on crime dramas.

To conclude, new viewers are keen to watching movies and TV series based on crime as its complete package of suspense, excitement and thrill. I believe in near future this trend will continue to rise and we will see more movies based on crime drama plot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and your personal opinion. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention suspense and excitement, these points are not fully explored or supported with deep analysis. The examples provided, such as 'The Nun' and 'Stranger Things', are not strictly crime dramas, which weakens the relevance of your argument. To improve, ensure your examples are accurate and provide more detailed explanations for why these genres resonate with audiences, perhaps by discussing the psychological appeal of mystery or the human fascination with justice and morality.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to transition between ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally mechanical, and some sentences feel disconnected. For instance, the jump between discussing 'young people' and the specific examples of TV shows could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more explicit, rather than relying on simple list-like transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'viewership records', 'execution', and 'culprit'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'young age people' (instead of 'young people' or 'the youth') and 'hike in viewership' (which is slightly informal). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'based on crime' or 'crime dramas' throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'it’s based on' (should be 'they are based on' to agree with plural subjects), 'keen to watching' (should be 'keen to watch'), and 'its complete package' (should be 'it is a complete package'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with missing quotation marks and apostrophes. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing articles or prepositions.
