In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The popularity of crime novels and TV crime dramas is increasing rapidly in many nations. While there are various causes behind this phenomenon such as spreading awareness and presenting realistic stories, I believe that these books and shows are increasing social problems and crime rates.
There are several reasons why this is happening. The major one is making people aware of criminal activities in the society. As these channels present the reality of world, individuals can save themselves from becoming victim of these crimes by paying more attention to their surroundings. Moreover, residents gain information about exiting laws against those crimes which make them feel more secure. For example, crime petrol, a television show, provides information about current ways of committing crimes so that innocent people do not get trapped by these culprits. Furthermore, modern society is more interested in realistic stories rather than daily soaps and family dramas. Therefore, in order to make more profits, these shows are broadcasted frequently.
On the other hand, I believe that although crime novels and television shows have some positive impacts on society, the results could be counterproductive in many ways. Firstly, some culprits take advantage of this published information to get more ideas of committing new crimes. They may find loopholes from these stories and indulge themselves in heinous crimes. Secondly, the negative content of these stories spreads fear among people and they start doubting everybody around them. For instance, youngsters feel unsafe in many areas which reduces their confidence considerably. Hence, crime fiction and TV crime dramas may disturb the peaceful environment of the communities.
In conclusion, educational and entertainment factors lead to an increasing demand of crime shows and books. However, they may have an adverse impact on the mind of viewers if not presented responsibly.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. You have a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the educational value versus the potential for copycat crimes. However, some points could be more deeply developed. For instance, the argument about 'realistic stories' is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of why this specific genre appeals to the modern psyche. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements, though the development of ideas is slightly general in places, which is typical of a Band 7 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive. The progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. To reach a higher band, ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural and less reliant on standard linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'heinous crimes', 'counterproductive', and 'loopholes'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'making people aware of criminal activities in the society' (should be 'in society') and 'exiting laws' (likely meant 'existing'). While the range is adequate for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated, idiomatic, or precise lexical choices that would characterize a Band 8 performance. The vocabulary is functional and clear throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'becoming victim of these crimes' (needs an article: 'a victim') and 'these shows are broadcasted frequently' ('broadcast' is the correct past participle). Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. You show good control over punctuation and sentence construction, which supports a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help improve this score.
