Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, The popularity of crime novels and television crime serials is becoming popular in many nations. There are numerous reasons behind it why these books and television shows are famous which will be discussed before my own perspective in following paragraphs.

To begin with the reasons about the popularity of crime shows and books. First and foremost, it creates the awareness about crime among the general public which describes crime activities going on in cities. In explanation, there are some cases that similarly predicts to someone condition. It assists to become brave and conscious. For example, some children are abused in their school and they do not know about it. It helps their parents find a clues if child's behaviour change in a same way. Moreover, few people prefer real based incident stories because they want to become a CID officer and want to increase their ability to build ideas to find a criminal when he or she become a officer.

I believe that crime books and shows has negative impacts on people's mental health because people who are addictive to watch that kind of show , they always have mindset about crime which they can see in even a non criminal. As a result, they face some issues such as depression and overthinking which further leads to some chronic illness. Apart from this, if young people have interest in watching these shows, they might feel these are normal actions of life. These shows effect to all of them who are not mature which increase the crime instead of reducing it.

In conclusion, I opine that crime books and serials give messages about the crimes in society , but this can also be given in news rather than making videos and writing books.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and a personal opinion. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph attempts to explain the popularity through 'awareness' and 'career aspirations,' but the examples, such as children being abused, are not clearly linked to the popularity of crime fiction. The second paragraph provides a clear opinion on the negative impacts, though the reasoning regarding 'chronic illness' is a bit of a leap. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explained with logical, real-world connections rather than generalized claims. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis could be more consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In explanation, there are some cases that similarly predicts to someone condition.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where 'these' and 'that kind of show' are used without precise antecedents. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are some repetitive phrases, such as 'crime novels and television crime serials' and 'crime shows and books.' Some word choices are slightly unnatural or incorrect, such as 'real based incident stories' instead of 'true-crime stories' and 'addictive to watch' instead of 'addicted to watching.' While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. Improving the range of synonyms and refining word choice would significantly enhance this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('crime books and shows has,' 'these shows effect to all of them'), article usage ('find a clues'), and awkward phrasing ('when he or she become a officer'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces missing before commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct grammatical markers.
