Student answer (Band 6.0)

A rampant escalation of popularity of crime novels and tv crime series could be observed in majority of nations. There could be a number of reasons why these kind of genres getting popularity among youth. This essay will discuss reasons to this trend in the subsequent trial of paragraphs with opinion.

To begin with, the popularity for crime fiction has surged significantly in past few years. The first and the foremost reason is that it evokes suspense and rational thoughts to solve crimes. Majority of crime series target audience to brainstorm and solve puzzles, making them play a vital role in these fictions by involving them. Secondly, an additional factor could be the crime documentaries based on real case scenarios. Some of the thriller series are based on or inspired by the real life stories offer much more intriguing journey in the lives of criminals which keep the audience intact to the chairs by focusing on the reality. For example, the documentaries available on Netflix titled the Jeffrey Dahmer case has gained popularity after this case was dormant for years. Hence, the popularity of crime genres has grown because of it offers real cases documented on television and by involving audience.

Furthermore, the gained popularity has became disadvantageous to the society. Firstly, the crime dramas or books are becoming more popular among the youth which has resulted in convincing them to commit a crime. A surge in crime has been observed significantly impacting the lives of common people. For instance, music or fiction with genres showing unlawful content has manipulated the young minds. Movies based on lives of gangsters has impacted youth to use illegal weapons.Secondly, as this genre is gaining popularity the other genres like comedy or romance are diminishing from society. The artists are more focused on making money than preserving the different art forms. Majority of the other artists who perform different genres are losing the beauty of art. Therefore, this genres is impacting the society in different ways.

To recapitulate, in my considered opinion, a balanced approach should be opted. Although, this genre has gained popularity by suspense to target the audience solve mysteries, it has also affected society by escalating crime rates among youth. Government should take action by implementing hybrid model of preserving other art forms as well. Moreover, the sensorship should be imposed on r-rated movies to control crime related activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. You provide clear reasons, such as the intellectual engagement of solving puzzles and the appeal of real-life crime documentaries. Your opinion is also stated, though the argument that crime fiction directly causes youth to commit crimes is a significant over-generalisation and lacks nuanced evidence. While the ideas are relevant, some points, such as the claim that other genres like comedy are 'diminishing' due to crime dramas, are not well-supported and feel slightly speculative. To improve, ensure your arguments are grounded in logical reasoning rather than broad assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'To recapitulate' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'subsequent trial of paragraphs'. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the popularity of crime fiction and the decline of other genres is not fully developed, which affects the overall progression of your argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'rampant escalation', 'dormant', and 'sensorship' (noting the spelling error). There are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'trial of paragraphs' instead of 'series of paragraphs' and 'intact to the chairs' instead of 'glued to their seats'. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, but some collocations are slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations more accurately and refining your word choices to sound more natural in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully convey your meaning, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'these kind of genres getting popularity' (should be 'these kinds of genres are gaining popularity') and 'the gained popularity has became' (should be 'has become'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors with articles and verb tenses throughout. The complexity of your sentences is sufficient, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
