Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has become increasingly common in most of nations to publish crime novels and telecast crime shows on television. There are several reason of their popularity. Although these topic can be beneficial to some extent, I believe it has certain drawbacks.

One main reason why crime novels are getting popularity in different nations is that they improve imagination. When people read such kind of stories, they can imagine the characters of the story in their mind which can sharp their imagination skills. Along with this, they may develop reading habits that can contribute to improve grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills as well.

Watching crime dramas on TV might be incredibly entertaining. People, who watch crime shows, they develop curiosity to know what happen next, which can be quite exciting and entertaining for them. After watching these shows they feel so relaxed and refreshed as they work as a stress buster for many people.

In my opinion, despite some advantages of reading crime stories and watching them on screen, I still believe that they can indulge youngsters towards crime instead of preventing them from criminal activities. For example, when people watch their favorite actors are performing in such stories, they try to imitate them in their real life without knowing the negative consequences of them. Eventually, they can commit serious crime after learning techniques from films.

In conclusion, while novels and TV dramas about crime can improve imagination, reading, communication skills and reduce stress, in my opinion, providing such kind of information to the public is not without drawbacks if they adopt such activities in their real life that are demonstrate rather than learning a lesson from them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains the popularity of crime fiction and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of imagination and stress relief, and the counter-argument regarding the influence on youngsters is well-placed. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about 'improving imagination' is stated but not deeply explored. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or elaborate on the 'why' behind your arguments. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes your stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. You use some cohesive devices like 'Along with this,' 'In my opinion,' and 'In conclusion,' which help the flow. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, the referencing within sentences could be smoother; for example, the phrase 'such kind of stories' is slightly awkward. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'criminal activities,' 'consequences,' and 'stress buster.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural collocations or word choices, such as 'sharp their imagination skills' (should be 'sharpen') and 'indulge youngsters towards crime' (should be 'encourage' or 'influence'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'several reason of their popularity' (should be 'reasons for'), 'these topic' (should be 'these topics'), and 'they work as a stress buster' (the subject 'they' is ambiguous here). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will help improve your accuracy.
