Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this day and age, crime books and TV crime series are well-known in certain nations. These crime novels and TV crime episodes are famous because they create suspense and make them hooked till the end. I opine that they should be watched as they spread awareness of recent crimes and make individuals' minds creative.

The key reason those novels and TV shows gain popularity is providing thrill by seeing those crime dramas. Once a person starts watching suspense shows, they are easily hooked by them. It creates an urge in their mind to find the criminal, which results in completing all episodes without breaking the continuity. For example, if a person reads the initial few pages of the crime book, then they will read the whole book in a day because their mind will not find peace until they find the criminal. Hence, this is the reason crime-related shows and books are well-known.

In my opinion, crime fiction and TV dramas are beneficial for citizens. Firstly, it spreads awareness regarding recent crimes and how they are happening to normal individuals. Consequently, they can be prepared for those horrible situations. Secondly, it makes a person creative. Since an individual watches crime episodes daily, their mind starts to find clues to solve this puzzle. Therefore, they learn to be a smart and observant person.

In a nutshell, books and TV shows related to crime are widespread among natives because of the thrill and suspense they provide, and I reckon that it improves their creativity and makes them aware of the situation in their city regarding crime.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and expressing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the suspenseful nature of the genre and the potential for increased awareness and cognitive stimulation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat simplistic. For instance, the argument that crime dramas make people 'creative' is a bit of a stretch and lacks deeper explanation or concrete evidence. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced arguments and elaborate on your points with more sophisticated reasoning rather than relying on repetitive explanations of 'thrill' and 'suspense'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In this day and age', 'The key reason', 'Consequently', and 'In a nutshell', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and avoiding overly simple sentence structures that occasionally disrupt the natural flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'suspense', 'observant', and 'continuity'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic phrasing. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'make them hooked' (should be 'get them hooked') and 'well-known in certain nations' (which is vague). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to the topic of media and psychology. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'make individuals' minds creative' and 'provide thrill by seeing those crime dramas', which sound slightly awkward. There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While you attempt complex sentences, they are not always error-free. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex structures to ensure they are both accurate and natural. The errors present do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
