Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of why youngsters are interested in crime fiction is vague, relying on the claim that they feel 'more energetic' after watching violence, which lacks logical depth. The discussion of your opinion is also quite brief and lacks specific examples or a strong, consistent stance. To improve, ensure that each reason is supported by a clear, logical explanation and a concrete example, and ensure your personal opinion is more explicitly stated and elaborated upon throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, 'To expound on' is used incorrectly to introduce an explanation, and 'However, this era has both positive and negative effects' does not effectively transition from the previous paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'these things', which lacks a precise antecedent. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that flows logically from the previous one.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of awkward word choices or incorrect collocations, such as 'Broadcasting offensive serial', 'mishappening', and 'trying to be copying'. These errors occasionally make the meaning slightly unclear. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'unlawful activities' and 'digitalised techniques', the overall range is limited. To reach a higher band, focus on learning collocations (words that naturally go together) and using more precise terminology to express your ideas without relying on repetitive or slightly misused phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the flow of the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the two main causes... is'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'youngsters eagerly wanted'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'which lead to make it more famous'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the errors do not completely prevent communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like tense consistency and subject-verb agreement.
