Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why crime fiction is popular and the writer's opinion. However, the development is limited. The ideas are repetitive, focusing almost exclusively on the concept of 'awareness' and 'information,' which lacks depth. The examples provided, such as 'rape case' and 'bank tragedy,' are listed rather than integrated into a coherent argument. To reach a higher band, you need to explore other reasons for popularity, such as the psychological thrill, the puzzle-solving aspect, or the escapism these genres provide. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments are underdeveloped and lack nuance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, but they are frequently mechanical or misused, such as 'There are such as examples of' and 'However, relevant reasons for...'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical flow between sentences. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt, and the repetition of phrases like 'TV crime drama' creates a clunky reading experience. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'popular,' 'crimes,' and 'information.' There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'flight high jacks' (hijacks), 'take awareness' (raise awareness), and 'save them self' (themselves). While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the frequent errors in word formation prevent the expression of more complex ideas. To improve, you should focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to media and crime, and practice using synonyms to avoid repeating the same words throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'crimes happened'), missing articles (e.g., 'in many country'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'People who didn’t know about what happens...'). Complex sentence structures are attempted but are often faulty, leading to run-on sentences or fragments. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of ellipses and capitalization. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practicing the correct use of articles and prepositions.
