Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nations, entertainment sources like crime novels and crime television programs are gaining more popularity day by day. This essay will elucidate various reasons behind this trend in subsequent paragraphs and I will share my opinion in the conclusion.

Firstly, mostly people like to watch or read stories which are true and those they can find only in crime novels and dramas. Nowadays people are bored with fictional web series and movies and they more inclined to the entertainment based on real life events, that they can get only in crime related movies and dramas. Most of the crime related media inspired by real life incidents and that is the key attraction for audience. For example, experts claim that, human mind accepts thing more easily and effectively those are true.

Secondly, some people love to watch or read crime media for learning purposes. In this contemporary epoch, crimes are on its peak and everyone wants to keep themselves and their family safe. To fulfill this purpose they like to watch such media so they can learn how to prepare themselves if similar situations occurred in their lives. For example, in India there is one show named as Savdan India that is particularly produced to educate people about domestic crimes.

In conclusion, there are numerous reason behind the popularity of crime novels and TV crime dramas but the main reasons are real life stories and awareness that people gain after watching them. In my opinion, extreme popularity of crime media is not good for society because it affects in a negative way on children and they could learn wrong things which are not good for society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the popularity of crime media and a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the appeal of real-life events and the educational value of crime shows. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that 'human mind accepts thing more easily' is a broad generalization that lacks depth. The opinion in the conclusion is clear, but it could have been integrated more effectively into the body paragraphs to create a more cohesive argument. Overall, the response is sufficient but would benefit from more detailed examples and nuanced analysis to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the idea of 'real life events' and the 'human mind' is somewhat abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'those' in the second paragraph. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited, and the progression of ideas could be smoother to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary epoch' and 'elucidate', though these are sometimes used in a slightly unnatural way. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'crimes are on its peak' instead of 'at their peak' and 'affects in a negative way' instead of 'has a negative effect'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the message, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the human mind'), subject-verb agreement ('crimes are on its peak'), and preposition usage. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'they more inclined to the entertainment', which is missing a verb. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on sentence variety and ensuring that basic grammatical rules, such as article usage and verb forms, are applied consistently.
