Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, crime stories whether in books or on television are becoming extremely popular around the world. This essay will discuss the reasons for this trend and give my opinion on it.

There are two main reasons why crime fiction is so popular. Firstly, it is very exciting and full of suspense. Readers and viewers want to know who is the criminal and how the police will catch him. This curiosity keeps them engaged till the end. For example, shows like CID and Crime Patrol in India are watched by millions because every episode has a new mystery.

Secondly, crime shows are not just entertaining, they are also related to real life. People learn about law, police investigation and psychology of criminals. Many people find it interesting to see how forensic science works. Also in our boring daily life, these thrilling stories give us excitement.

In my opinion, crime novels and dramas are mostly positive. They are a good source of entertainment and they can also increase our awareness. For instance, many shows teach people how to be safe from fraud and theft. However, there is a negative side too. If children watch too much violent content, it can have a bad effect on them. Also some shows show too much blood and murder which is not good.

To conclude, crime fiction is popular because it is suspenseful and connected to real life. In my view, it is good entertainment as long as we watch it in a limit and children are kept away from too much violent content.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it identifies reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the mention of suspense and the educational aspect of forensic science. However, the development is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more depth or nuanced analysis. For instance, the point about 'real life' could be expanded to discuss the psychological appeal of justice being served in a chaotic world. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For example', and 'In my opinion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. To improve, you could vary the transition phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on a standard list-like structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'forensic science', 'suspense', and 'investigation'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler words like 'good', 'bad', and 'interesting'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'bad effect', you could use 'detrimental impact', and instead of 'in a limit', you should use 'in moderation'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'how the police will catch him' (should be 'how the police catch them') and 'watch it in a limit' (should be 'watch it in moderation'). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and prepositions. The sentence structures are generally correct, but there is a lack of more advanced grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, which would demonstrate greater control and range.
