Student answer (Band 6.5)

Different type of entertainment sources are becoming very popular day by day, some of them include crime related novels and dramas in distinct nations. There are various reasons behind this and I believe it has its own merits and demerits. My essay aims at discussing the given statement in detail and reasons behind it along with my viewpoint.

On the one hand, the most prominent point is that usually individuals love to watch more and more thrilling content everytime. To elaborate on it, not only watching or reading related to crime gives goosebumps to people as it can be very suspenseful but also it can fulfill the requirements for people to enjoy a totally different content unlike common serials and stories. Additionally, people like to experience these stories in order to gain knowledge about how a crime plan can be executed or how they can avoid being a victim of a crime or scam which I believe is a perfect way to be educated regarding this.

On the other hand, although it has many benefits to watch those documentaries, there are some possible drawbacks too. To explain it, some children can get influenced by these crime stories in an unwanted way which may pave a path for them to be criminals in a very young age. To state an example, a few years ago a kid got influenced by watching these series daily and murdered his own aunt after a small argument which was awful. There are many more examples in the world related to this.

In conclusion, I agree that there are some demerits of generalizing these crime related content to avoid those government should put some restrictions which can limit the age or particular content to be published but I undoubtedly believe that it is a good source of educating general public which can allow them to be safe in many ways.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it explains the popularity of crime fiction and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the thrill of suspense and the educational value of crime prevention. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding the negative influence on children is supported by a specific example, but the discussion on 'merits and demerits' is slightly superficial. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' behind the popularity with more nuanced analysis rather than just stating that people enjoy 'thrilling content'. Overall, the position is clear throughout, and the response meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as 'To elaborate on it' and 'To explain it'. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, sophisticated progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'thrilling content', 'suspenseful', and 'victims'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural collocations or word choices, such as 'different type of entertainment sources' (should be 'types') and 'generalizing these crime related content' (should be 'generalizing this crime-related content'). To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring correct word forms and collocations to demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'everytime' should be 'every time', and there are issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'a very young age' (should be 'at a very young age') and 'those documentaries' (when none were previously mentioned). Complex structures are attempted, but they occasionally lack precision. To achieve a higher band, focus on reducing these small errors and increasing the variety of complex sentence forms while maintaining accuracy.
