Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and the writer's opinion. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument regarding 'awareness' and 'precautions' is a bit generic and could have been supported with more specific examples of how a TV show actually teaches safety. While the task is fully addressed, the supporting arguments rely on general statements rather than detailed analysis, which limits the score to a 6.0. To improve, ensure that each point is fully explored with concrete reasoning rather than just stating that something is 'important' or 'beneficial'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel forced. For example, the opening paragraph is slightly repetitive, stating that the topic is an 'irrefutable fact' before immediately questioning it. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and sophistication. The student frequently repeats phrases like 'crime based', 'books and TV shows', and 'suspenseful'. While the meaning is always clear, there is little attempt to use less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions. Words like 'incidence' are used incorrectly (should be 'incidents'), and the collocation 'brainstorm and solve the situation' is slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for a broader range of vocabulary, including synonyms and more precise collocations related to the genre of crime fiction.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('books and books often loved', 'studies highlights') and missing articles ('in such criminal incidence'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor errors with possessives ('viewer's attention'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic agreement and article usage, and attempt to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
