Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this generation people are more interested in watching crime dramas or reading crime novels. This is due to their unpredictable story line.

Before many people are interested in romantic and family dramas, but as generation changes and advancement in technology people are more interested into the movies which makes them to sit on the edge of their seat until the end of the story. For example, if we take a crime movie the director first give some hints for us to predict killer but the end the killer will not be the same person which amazes the audience. As a result, it creates more buzz for the movie and attracts more audience to watch the film.

If we take crime novels every chapter end with a suspense that makes reader to go for one more chapter and by the end of the book they give a lead to another sequel which makes readers to hung on the book and when there is new release of the book people are more interested to buy as the story is still unfinished. For instance, our brains will always think more about the unfinished things and creates a curiosity which makes us to read more about it. Therefore, it bring back the readers to purchase those books more and if they find it interesting they suggest them to their friends.

In conclusion, crime novel and dramas are more popular as it creates more suspense, thrill and unpredictable story line which makes people to watch till the end. This days the crime thrillers are released in online platforms in the form of web series to reach wider audience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for popularity and the writer's opinion. However, the opinion is not clearly stated or fully developed. While the writer explains why these genres are popular—citing suspense and unpredictable plot twists—the personal opinion is largely implied rather than explicitly articulated. The ideas are relevant but remain somewhat superficial, lacking the depth required for a higher band. To improve, ensure that your personal stance is clearly defined in the introduction and consistently supported throughout the body paragraphs with more specific, nuanced examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the discussion of movies and the subsequent paragraph on novels. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'unpredictable story line', 'suspense', and 'sequel'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'makes readers to hung on the book' (should be 'keeps readers hooked') and 'it bring back the readers'. The use of vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your range of collocations and idiomatic expressions would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Before many people are interested' instead of 'were', 'director first give' instead of 'gives', and 'This days' instead of 'These days'). These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent tense usage and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
