Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in popularity of crime novels and TV crime dramas because it targets the audience's curiosity with its hook and cliffhangers connecting the reality with fiction. While i am in favour of novels and TV dramas showcasing true events, i disagree with the quantity of fictional aspect that is incorporated in the name of creative liberty.

To begin with, it is evident that crime novels and TV crime dramas has gain popularity now adays due to its connection with real life incidents and how it is being showcased. This is largely because writers ensure that the audience is kept on edge with the cliffhangers and the suspense which makes the people believe that by reading crime novels and TV crime dramas they are staying updated with all that is going on in the world and are learning ways to prevent themselves from any possible crimes.

However, another compelling factor to consider is the authenticity of the content that is being shared. Although i agree that crime novels and TV crime dramas give us a peak into the dark reality of the society, i have an objection on the extent to which the fictional aspect is incorporated to make it more suspensful and gruesome. For instance, in many of the TV dramas they show that forces act only after severe damage is done or are biased in solving cases, but that's not right, all our forces make sure to protect us at the cost of their lives.

To summarize, although i am in favour with the increasing popularity of the crime novels and TV crime drama, the government needs to stricten the rules in context with the content that is been showcased via novels and TV dramas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention 'curiosity' and 'cliffhangers', these points could be expanded with more specific examples of why these elements appeal to human psychology. The argument regarding the 'fictional aspect' is relevant, but the example about police forces is a bit narrow. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are more thoroughly explored and linked back to the broader societal impact of these genres.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'To summarize' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. For example, the phrase 'crime novels and TV crime dramas' is repeated frequently, which affects the natural flow of the text. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms like 'these genres' or 'such media') would enhance the cohesion of your writing and make the progression of ideas feel more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'authenticity', 'compelling', and 'creative liberty'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'stricten the rules' is not standard English; 'tighten regulations' or 'impose stricter rules' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'peak into the dark reality' should be 'peek'. The repetition of the full phrase 'crime novels and TV crime dramas' throughout the essay limits your score, as it suggests a lack of lexical flexibility. Using synonyms or broader terms would improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'crime novels and TV crime dramas has gain popularity' should be 'have gained popularity') and punctuation errors (e.g., 'i' should be capitalized as 'I'). There are also minor errors in article usage and verb tense consistency, such as 'content that is been showcased'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement would be highly beneficial.
