Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to address the prompt effectively. The task asks why crime fiction is popular and for your opinion on it; however, you have written an essay arguing that crime novels and TV shows are harmful and cause children to commit crimes. This is a misinterpretation of the topic. Furthermore, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The arguments provided are repetitive and lack logical connection to the actual question asked. To improve, ensure you read the prompt carefully to identify the specific requirements and provide relevant, well-supported arguments that directly answer the 'why' and 'opinion' components of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is unclear. While you use some linking words like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', they are often used mechanically or inappropriately given the content of the paragraphs. The referencing is sometimes confusing, such as in the second paragraph where the transition from technology to crime is abrupt and lacks a logical flow. The ideas within the paragraphs are not well-developed, making the overall structure feel disjointed. Improving the logical connection between sentences and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single, clear idea will help improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic phrases like 'increasing more and more' and 'many disadvantages'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'In this words' and 'during start it', which make your meaning difficult to follow at times. You rely on a very narrow range of vocabulary, which prevents you from expressing your ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary and focus on using words in their correct context, rather than repeating the same simple structures throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede communication. Common issues include incorrect pluralisation (e.g., 'children’s' instead of 'children'), subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'everywhere in nations have'), and awkward sentence structures. You rely almost exclusively on simple sentences, and your attempts at more complex structures are often grammatically incorrect. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and learning how to correctly use plural forms and articles. Practising the construction of complex sentences will also help you demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
