IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Crime novels and TV crime dramas have gained much popularity these days. Every household witnesses fans of either the crime novels or TV crime dramas, and sometimes even both of these. I personally watch these dramas too, in my spare time, and last week I bought a couple of crime novels as well from the book fair.

The book worms are absolutely in love with crime novels, especially since the latest series of Crime Patrol are out. According to a report published in the newspaper yesterday, 700 copies of the novel have already been sold out, in the first week itself. Also, I heard that the Drama Director Alan Jones has decided to make a TV crime drama series on this book.

There are people, however, who are quite disappointed with all this hype around crime novels and dramas. Such believe that these kind of novels and dramas lead to an increase in criminal activities and give more ideas to such notorious elements in the society. According to them, such dramas and novels should be banned in the country in order to control and bring down the crime rates in the region. They argue that such novels and dramas promote crime culture in the society and are thus very harmful.

In my opinion, such novels and dramas are very exciting to read and watch. I love the suspicion, surprises and mysteries involved in these dramas and stories. I look forward to read more and more of such novels and watch all the upcoming TV crime dramas. They have a tendency to refresh the brain and make it more alive and wide awake.

To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are appropriate for a formal essay. Avoid overly colloquial expressions to maintain a professional tone throughout your response.
