Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a lot of countries, crime novels and TV shows related to crime are getting popular day by day. This is an issue we should focus on. This will discuss why it is getting popular and my point of view this thing.

To start with, why people like to watch or read this kind of novels and tv shows? People nowadays like to read and watch things which are interesting and full of suspense, and these kinds of dramas and books have a lot of suspense and thrill; this thing attracts audience the most, including the fight scenes. For instance, people will enjoy a movie with crime and fight scenes, rather than an educational story, this illustrates a difference. Moreover, as per demand directors and producers also give priority to this kind of movies and novels. These are the foremost causes of the popularity of these dramas and novels.

However, this kind of content should be limited and properly censored by the government to protect the upcoming generations from getting involved in crime scenes and illegal activities. Because this kind of dramas and novels often have some content which promotes the violence without looking at the consequences. According to me, Authorities should ban ultra-crime scenes in movies, and age limitations should be applied on watching this. Because this can increase crimes rates and promote violence in society.

In conclusion, interesting stories and crime scenes always pulls a large audience, but this thing should not be avoided by the government and proper limitations should apply on these kind of novels and dramas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation for why people enjoy crime dramas relies on general statements like 'interesting and full of suspense' without exploring the psychological appeal or the nature of escapism. The opinion section is clear, but the argument regarding censorship could be more nuanced. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis of why these genres resonate with audiences, rather than relying on repetitive phrasing such as 'this kind of dramas and novels'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To start with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the popularity of crime shows and the need for censorship is abrupt. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'this kind of' or 'this thing'. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows logically from the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to express your ideas, such as 'suspense', 'thrill', 'censored', and 'illegal activities'. However, there is a lack of precision and some repetition. Phrases like 'this thing' are used too frequently and are too informal for an academic essay. You also struggle with collocations; for example, 'pulls a large audience' is understandable but 'attracts a large audience' is more natural. To improve, try to use more sophisticated synonyms and avoid vague references. Expanding your vocabulary to include more topic-specific collocations related to media and societal impact would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'why people like to watch' is a statement, not a question, so it should not end with a question mark. There are also subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'proper limitations should apply on these kind of novels', which should be 'these kinds of novels'. Punctuation is occasionally misused, particularly with comma splices. While these errors do not prevent communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
