Student answer (Band 6.0)

The trend of TV series and books with criminal content has become more popular in many parts of the world. various reasons are responsible for such dramas and novels. I believe that that is happening under the pressure of social media.

One reason behind such criminal scenes on TV and scripts written in books is adventures mind-set of youngsters. They are surrounded by a society where crime has increased over time. These cases make them curious to discover the factors, outcomes and reasons. Therefore, such incidents encourage them to watch such series and read books that align with real stories.

Similarly, people are influenced by social media, adventure, and film stars. When a serial is released and they watch their favorite actor doing criminal or adventurous roles they appreciate the actions. Despite thinking about the impacts, people relate their success to name and fame. The novels, also are at the same pace which offers harsh scripts, characters and incidents.

In my opinion, Crime dramas and books can offer awareness as long as producers and TV channels know the limits as such content can encourage children to commit crime and perform illegal activities. Government should access each recorded video to decide whether it should display or not for public.

In conclusion, although crime dramas and novels are popular nowadays, this should be finalized by authorities before broadcasting and printing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and providing a personal opinion. However, the essay falls short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of development. The ideas regarding the 'adventurous mindset' and 'social media influence' are relevant but remain somewhat superficial. The opinion section is clear but could be better supported with more specific examples or a more nuanced discussion of the impact of such media. Because the response is under-length, the development of ideas is restricted, preventing a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One reason behind', 'Similarly', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the flow within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the link between 'social media' and 'film stars' in the third paragraph is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the overall progression of ideas is slightly hindered by the limited length of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'adventurous mindset' and 'illegal activities'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'adventures mind-set' (should be 'adventurous') and 'at the same pace' (which does not fit the context of describing novels). To achieve a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary related to media and societal influence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I believe that that is happening' (repetition), 'adventures mind-set' (incorrect word form), and 'The novels, also are at the same pace' (incorrect punctuation and phrasing). Additionally, 'Government should access each recorded video to decide whether it should display or not' is grammatically awkward. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall clarity and flow of the writing. More attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence construction is needed.
