Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, in many countries, crime novels and TV shows are becoming more popular. One of the major reasons behind this trend is that people consider crime book and TV drama entertaining. In my own view, crime fictions and TV crime shows are educative, as they equip people with basic understanding of safety techniques.

To begin with, crime stories and TV show are common because individuals enjoy watching them. This means that many people prefer to watch crime documentries with their friends and families during their leisure. As a result, it strengthens their bond. Moreover, many people particularly enjoy crime books because the scences are engaging and there is a lot of suspense. To illustrate, many people prefer to download crime documentries on Netflix and Primebox.

I strongly believe that crime fiction and TV crime dramas are educative. Most crime fictions teach individuals how to react to dangerous situations and equip people with emergency skills. There are some TV crime dramas that carefully illustrate how people should act during unpleasant occurance including theft, kidnapping and robbery. Also, crime books equip individuals with basic safety education and preventive techniques to avoid danger. For instance, there are some crime fictions focused on safety education.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that crime stories and TV dramas are becoming more popular in recent times. This is because people find TV shows interesting and engaging. From my point of view, crime fictions are educative, as they equip individuals with safety precautions. Additionally, crime fiction teach individuals how to react during emergencies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for popularity and your personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the explanation for popularity focuses primarily on 'entertainment' and 'leisure' without exploring deeper psychological or cultural reasons. Similarly, the argument that crime fiction is 'educative' is asserted but lacks concrete, convincing examples; claiming that crime dramas teach people how to handle kidnapping or robbery is a weak argument that lacks logical depth. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced reasons and ensure your personal opinion is supported by more realistic or logical justifications.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For example, the second paragraph relies heavily on simple sentence structures that repeat the same point about 'enjoyment'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and avoiding repetitive sentence starters. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion needs more sophistication to move beyond a basic level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You frequently repeat words like 'crime', 'people', and 'educative'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'documentries' (documentaries), 'scences' (scenes), and 'occurance' (occurrence). While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is limited. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to media consumption and the psychological appeal of thrillers. Avoid using the same basic adjectives repeatedly; instead, aim for more descriptive language to enhance the impact of your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'crime book and TV drama' should be pluralized, and 'crime fiction teach' should be 'crime fiction teaches' (subject-verb agreement). There are also issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'in recent times' (which is fine, but 'a basic understanding' was needed earlier). The control of grammar is inconsistent, and while these errors do not prevent communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and plural forms.
