IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the passage of time, a sea change has been seen in the priorities of a visible majority regarding their choices either towards reading books based on crime or watching Tv dramas on the same issue. Thereby, this growing trend has pushed me to figure out the reasons behind and present my opinion on this.

Certainly, I believe that curiosity is one of the factors responsible for this inclination. Also, the adrenaline released after the suspense is over what makes them eager to read and watch such stories. To substantiate it, the suspense is maintained in such stories until the last, so that viewers or readers can feel amused and engaged till the last.

Above and beyond this, as crime rate is increasing day by day, it is the natural urge for people to find different possible scenarios of crime and hence get interested towards such shows.

In my opinion, excess of anything is bad. When people are addicted to such series, its not uncommon that they would try to attempt it on their own as a fantasy. Such stories when implemented by youngsters lead them to a criminal world unknowingly, since they are immature enough to understand the difference between imagination and reality. Therefore, they might suffer with the bad outcome of performing such activities.

To conclude, Popularity of such shows is a sign that we need to figure out the reasons why current generation is demanding heavily and if the content shown has any side effects on the young and tender minds.
