Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding why crime novels and TV dramas are popular and giving an opinion on them. However, the development of ideas often drifts from the specific topic of crime fiction into generic discussions about 'embracing change' and 'step[ping] beyond familiar surroundings.' For instance, the example provided for watching crime shows involves an individual watching an unfamiliar show and making practical decisions, which feels more suited to a prompt about travel or trying new experiences rather than crime media. Additionally, the position is somewhat confusingly stated as 'a person choice and level of interest.' Because parts of the response are tangential and under-developed regarding the specific genre of crime fiction, it aligns best with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a basic structure and some attempts at logical organisation using cohesive markers such as 'One significant reason', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. However, overall progression is weakened by a lack of logical connection between the paragraphs and the specific topic. Referencing is also unclear at times, such as 'it can encourage people' and 'those who support crime novels and TV crime dramas have a negtive effect on brain', where pronoun reference and logical links break down. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty and repetitive, placing this response firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively limited and repetitive, with several instances of awkward word choice and collocation that stem from memorised essay templates that do not fit the prompt. Examples include 'chace of interest' instead of 'chance or choice of interest', 'mentaleffects', and 'wider the usage of brain' instead of 'broaden cognitive abilities'. There are also frequent spelling and word-form errors, such as 'negtive', 'ablity', and 'effect' used as a verb where a noun is needed. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic message, noticeable errors cause difficulty for the reader, fitting Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty or ungrammatical. For example, the opening sentence 'Crime novels and TV crime dramas has become...' contains a subject-verb agreement error. Other notable errors include 'an individual watch an unfamiliar shows', 'it effect on thinking level of people', and missing articles. Punctuation and phrasing errors occur frequently throughout the text, often straining the reader's understanding. Although some simple sentences are controlled, the frequency of basic grammatical errors places this text at Band 4.5, rounded to Band 5.
