IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries today, crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming more and more popular. Why do you think these books and TV shows are popular? What is your opinion of crime fiction and TV crime dramas?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, in so many countries, the growing popularity of crime novels and crime dramas is alarming. This is so because of the public interest in them and its entertaining nature. This essay will discuss this and also explore why I believe age discretion is important.
To begin, these days many people are curious about different crimes and its outcome. This curiosity stems from the desire to know and learn more about crimes, ways they are perpetuated, handled by authorities and how to stay safe. Again, these crime scenes, creates a lot of suspense captivating the mind and at same time entertaining the reader. A good example is the Things fall apart novel and drama show by Chenue Achebe, which captives its readers with the crime carried out by Okonkwo killing his son.
Furthermore, these genres while entertaining are very educating, providing readers and viewers with insights to as why crime happen, their consequences, avoidance and how to stay safe thereby raising security awareness in the minds of people. For example, the display of crime dramas shown in one popular movie by the title money heist, reviewed ways people could stay safe when attacked by gang of robbers.
Subsequently, is of no doubt that crime scenes are informative, but can also pose a lot of dangers to the minds of the people. This is so because some of this information are misleading or misinterpreted by the viewers, resulting in them picking up all manner of social-vice behaviors. For example, there has been reports of teenagers killing their friends from around the world. The conception of these ideas has been linked to the visual consumptions.
In Conclusion, the growing rate of crime books and shows can be attributed to the interest of the people in them. While this can be informative, discretion of its views should be paramount in reducing the increase in crime rate in our family and society at large.

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing different aspects, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in transitions like 'Subsequently, is of no doubt that...' and 'Again, these crime scenes, creates a lot of suspense...'. Referencing can also be slightly unclear at times. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, but the mechanical nature of some transitions limits the score to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'discretion', 'captivating', 'conception', and 'misinterpreted'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'its entertaining nature' referring to public interest, 'ways they are perpetuated' (perpetrated usually refers to crimes, not ways), and 'visual consumptions'. Spelling and word-form errors, like 'Chenue Achebe' and 'reviewed' instead of 'revealed', also occur. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the essay.
