Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the task by discussing why crime stories are popular and offering a personal opinion. However, the essay is incomplete and stops mid-sentence, reaching only 209 words, which fails the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length severely limits the development of ideas, particularly in the conclusion and final body paragraph. While the writer touches on curiosity, brain stimulation, and crime awareness, these ideas remain under-developed due to the truncated text. Therefore, Task Achievement is penalised for length and lack of full development, placing it at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an attempted conclusion. However, overall progression is disrupted because the response ends abruptly in an unfinished sentence. Paragraphing is used, but the third body paragraph is incomplete. Cohesive devices such as 'This is because', 'Many people are tend to', and 'As a result' are used, but grammatical errors within transitions and referencing sometimes make the flow mechanical or unclear. There is an attempt to logically sequence ideas, but the lack of completion pulls the coherence down to Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited but minimally adequate for discussing the topic. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'adrenaline harmone', 'curiosity', and 'mysterious situations', but there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Many people are tend to' and 'brain workouts'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary limitations and word-formation errors (e.g., 'harmone') cause some difficulty for the reader. These issues align with the Band 5.0 descriptors for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Crime books and TV crime dramas has become'), incorrect verb forms ('are tend to', 'people should aware'), and incomplete clauses. Punctuation is also problematic in places. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and mean that error-free sentences are relatively sparse, fitting the Band 5.0 criteria for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
