Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is a widely debated topic these days whether the crime novels and TV crime dramas are becoming popular among people or not. I am going to examine this question from both points of view and explain why I believe that crime novels and TV shows are popular.
Some people argue that the benefits of crime novels and TV shows considerably outweigh its drawbacks. The main reason of that is young people nowadays take interest in adventures. Their brain always focuses on the interesting information that challange it. It is also believe that the crime novels add valuable awareness in public so that they can be aware of frauds and scams. A good example of this is that I watch a netflix series "The Mentalist" in which a psychic helps police to catch and arrest a murderer. This series made me believe that people can do anything when they are in rageous situation.
On the other hand, others argue that crime novels and TV shows should not be popular. The reason of this belief is some people take idea from these novels and tv shows to commit crime. Furthermore, it is a common perception that people who read crime novels always try to implement their learning to manipulate others. A particularly good scenario that I would like to address, once I heard a news of crime in which a criminal learnt the act of murder from crime novel. He clearly told in his interview that he has been reading novels for five years. He has been planning this murder since then.
In conclusion, I would agree with the statement that crime novels and TV crime shows are more beneficial for public so that they can learn and critically analyse the situation around them. It can help people to train their brain in accordance with how to react in a bad situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why crime novels and TV shows are popular and giving an opinion on them. A clear position is presented, concluding that these media forms are beneficial. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the second paragraph touches on reasons such as the love for adventure and public awareness, points like 'young people nowadays take interest in adventures' are somewhat general and under-developed. Furthermore, the supporting example from the Netflix series 'The Mentalist' is loosely connected to the argument about people acting in stressful situations, and the conclusion shifts the focus slightly back to general benefits without fully synthesising the earlier points. To reach a higher level, all ideas would need more thorough expansion and fully relevant, detailed personal examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at a four-paragraph structure, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are generally organized logically, moving from reasons for popularity to potential drawbacks and a final stance. However, cohesion can feel mechanical or repetitive at times, particularly with transitional phrases such as 'Some people argue', 'On the other hand, others argue', and 'In conclusion'. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'The main reason of that is', which disrupts the natural flow of ideas between sentences. To improve, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring logical progression is smooth and unobtrusive throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main message despite noticeable limitations. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'considerably outweigh', 'frauds and scams', and 'critically analyse', which shows a reasonable effort to expand lexical range. However, there are frequent inappropriate word choices and collocations, such as 'take interest in', 'challange it' (spelling), 'add valuable awareness', 'rageous situation', and 'take idea from'. While these inaccuracies and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater precision in word choice, better control of collocations, and improved spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as noun clauses and relative clauses (e.g., 'a netflix series "The Mentalist" in which a psychic helps police'). There are, however, several recurring grammatical errors involving prepositions, articles, and verb patterns, such as 'the crime novels' (unnecessary article), 'The main reason of that' (preposition error), 'It is also believe' (passive voice error), and 'once I heard a news of crime' (uncountable noun usage). Despite these errors in grammar, punctuation, and phrasing, they rarely impede overall communication. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences when using complex structures and eliminate basic agreement and prepositional mistakes.
