Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons for the popularity of crime novels and TV dramas and presenting a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph provides good reasons regarding suspense and solving mysteries, some points are slightly repetitive or under-developed, such as the brief statement that 'audience enjoy solving mysteries'. The second paragraph explores relevant themes like justice and human behavior, supported by effective examples like 'Sherlock' and Agatha Christie. To reach the next level, all ideas would need to be fully extended and supported throughout with deeper elaboration and a more consistent depth of analysis across every main point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a final conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the reasons for popularity and the writer's personal opinion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, using standard transition words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or faulty, as seen in the phrasing 'Secondly, popularity of crime dramas is that...', which lacks smooth integration. To achieve a higher band, the flow between sentences and paragraphs needs to be more natural and seamless, avoiding slightly abrupt transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's ideas. The student attempts less common items and specific terminology, such as 'suspense', 'critical thinking skills', and 'criminal investigations'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('immence', 'amoung', 'ingreasingly', 'untill') and awkward word choices or collocations ('take challenges throughout watching', 'make them carefully and Build a skills'). These lexical inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the writing from securing a higher score. To improve, the student needs to expand their control over less common vocabulary, ensure accurate word forms and spelling, and refine collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and compound structures effectively to express ideas. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, such as missing articles ('the main reason is that audience enjoy'), incorrect pluralisation or agreement ('audience enjoy', 'One of the main reason'), and awkward phrasing ('throughout watching and reading theTV and novels'). Despite these errors, the structures used do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the essay. To move up to the next band, the student should aim for greater accuracy across more complex grammatical structures and eliminate recurring minor errors in agreement and articles.
