Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing why crime books and TV dramas are popular and giving a personal opinion on them. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, with repetitive arguments centering mostly on the idea of thrill and excitement. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 215 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand the response to meet the minimum word count and provide more fully developed, detailed explanations and varied examples for both parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The writer uses basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure of the essay. However, referencing and cohesion are at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, and the logical progression between sentences could be smoother. For example, sentences like 'To explain it, folks like to watch that type of moves...' lack sophisticated links. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure referencing throughout the text is precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'curiosity', 'creativity', and 'mysteries'. However, there are noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice that cause some difficulty for the reader. Examples include spelling mistakes like 'becomeing', 'beacuse', 'boreed', 'moives', 'insted', 'explicate', 'mysterical', and awkward phrasing such as 'folks like to watch that type of moves' and 'create the confusion between all the audience'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and use words with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex sentences which are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'this shows and novels are popular' and 'there are number of people', tense inconsistencies such as 'movie and books which were more popular', and awkward clause structures like 'there are various factors which show that why this type of novels and dramas are popular'. To improve, the writer needs to increase the variety of complex sentence forms while maintaining tighter control over basic grammatical rules and punctuation.
