Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent times, there has been a growing trend to read crime novels and watch crime TV dramas. As crime rates are significantly increasing in many countries, people are being more interested to read such stories. I believe that showcasing crime with meaningful lessons in novels and dramas are an excellent way to create awareness among people, and it will also reduce crime rates to some extent.
The rise in crimes around the world has significantly garnered public attention. As a result, people prefer to watch crime documentaries to know how criminals meticulously plan to execute a criminal act. To illustrate, CID was a very popular Indian crime show based on real-life stories, which gained worldwide popularity, as people liked the way how crime investigation department identified the criminals. Moreover, the suspense associated with the crime stories hook the audience who connects the puzzles to identify the criminals. For instance, people like reading the gripping detective series of Sherlock Holmes, where suspense and thriller engage the readers throughout the story.
I personally believe that these dramas and novels are invaluable tools to create awareness among people, so they can stay more cautious about real life criminals. For instance, TV dramas nowadays are based on real stories which educate people so that they do not fall prey to such criminals. Furthermore, such books and TV shows can discourage people from committing crimes, as people get to know of the unfavourable consequences and punishments following such criminal acts. However, writers should avoid showing excessive violence, as many young aduience may have a negative impact on their minds
In conclusion, the popularity of crime novels and TV shows is mainly attributed to the growing interest of people in such stories due to their suspence and thriller genres. Crime novels and dramas have a positive impact on reducing the crime rate in the society, as people will be more aware of the government laws and punishments associated with criminal conduct.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it explains popularity through public interest in crime, investigative detail and suspense, and gives a clear positive view of crime fiction as a source of awareness and deterrence. Examples such as CID and Sherlock Holmes help support these points, while the caution about excessive violence adds some balance. The position remains consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. To strengthen the response further, develop the reasons with more precise explanation rather than broad claims. For example, the link between crime dramas and lower crime rates is asserted but not demonstrated; explain how awareness might change behaviour, and distinguish entertainment value from educational value. Some claims, such as crime rates increasing worldwide, are also generalised without qualification.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on popularity and personal opinion, and a conclusion that returns to the main points. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Moreover,” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader. The examples are placed near the claims they support. However, cohesion is not always smooth: the first paragraph moves quickly from rising crime rates to interest in stories, and the final paragraph largely repeats earlier points rather than synthesising them. Some connections between ideas could be made more explicit, particularly between watching crime investigations and the claim that audiences become more cautious. Varying transitions and using clearer references would make the progression more flexible and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “crime investigation,” “suspense,” “gripping detective series,” “unfavourable consequences,” and “criminal conduct.” These choices help convey the subject and show attempts to use less common language. Some collocations and word forms are inaccurate or awkward, however, such as “more interested to read,” “the way how,” and “suspense and thriller engage.” There are also spelling errors in “aduience” and “suspence,” which slightly reduce precision. A few expressions are repetitive, especially repeated references to “crime novels and dramas” and “crime rates.” Aim for more natural collocations and accurate spelling, and use alternatives such as “crime fiction,” “investigative programmes,” and “audiences” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “where,” and “so that.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraphing helps make the argument easy to follow. Some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “people are being more interested to read” has an incorrect construction; use “people are becoming more interested in reading.” In “showcasing crime … are an excellent way,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “many young audience” needs a plural form and a clearer grammatical structure. The sentence beginning “TV dramas nowadays” also contains an awkwardly placed gap in the submitted text. Review agreement, verb patterns after adjectives, and article/plural use, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
