Student answer (Band 5.5)

Tv crime dramas and novels are becoming more prominent among many nations in recent times. I am strongly of the opinion that these are popular because of advanced scripts that creates suspense, the thrill and education.

Producers or writers of Tv crime dramas and novels have elevated their plot, this which keeps people on edge to see what is coming next. The storyline is now so good that it's so hard to predict what will happen or the moment you think you have it discovered, the plot changes. There is an exciting thrill to find out what is next or how the story plays out, and a very good example is the series "How to get away with murder". This series opened a broadway for the production of more crime dramas as it was thrilling, It kept people on the edge of their sits but most importantly it was entertaining.

In addition, asides the entertaining effect crime novels or drama offers it also educates people. It opens our eye to things we did not notice or think of as a big deal and patterns to beware of. Crime dramas or novels have alerted a lot people because once they notice a behaviour or pattern, their sense immedialy clicks to a movie scence or page in the novel they read where similar occurence happened and immediately they move in action. Asides the entertaining effect or thrill it gives to the audience, It most importantly enlightens and educates them on the things they should beware of and patterns that should be reported to the apporiate autorities with immediate effect.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain popularity through suspense, excitement and the educational value of crime stories, and you express a positive view, especially in the conclusion. The example of “How to Get Away with Murder” helps illustrate the entertainment point. However, the educational claim is less fully supported: you say viewers learn to recognise suspicious behaviour, but do not give a specific, convincing example of what they might learn or clarify the limits of fictional portrayals. Your opinion is also more implied than directly evaluated; a brief statement about why you consider crime fiction beneficial, while acknowledging any drawback, would make your position clearer. Overall, the ideas are relevant, though some are less developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to reasons and then a concluding paragraph. Linking expressions such as “In addition” and “most importantly” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression becomes repetitive: the final paragraph repeats the claims that crime stories entertain, create a thrill and educate audiences, rather than adding a distinct conclusion or further development. Some connections are also unclear, particularly “This series opened a broadway for the production of more crime dramas,” whose relationship to the popularity argument needs explaining. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but clearer topic sentences and less repetition would make the argument flow more smoothly and cohesion feel less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “suspense,” “thrill,” “storyline,” “patterns” and “authorities,” and these choices make your main ideas understandable. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “keeps people on edge.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “opened a broadway,” “opened our eye,” “alerted a lot people” and “move in action.” Spelling errors such as “immedialy,” “scence,” “occurence” and “apporiate” also reduce accuracy. The repeated use of “thrill,” “entertaining” and “educates” limits variety. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully to make your vocabulary more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because,” “as” and “once.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main message is usually understandable. However, errors occur across sentence forms and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “advanced scripts that creates suspense” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “Producers or writers … have elevated their plot, this which keeps people on edge” is not correctly constructed. The sentence beginning “The storyline is now so good that it's so hard to predict” also combines ideas awkwardly. Review agreement, clause construction and punctuation, and divide long or tangled sentences into clearer units.
