Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it gives reasons for the popularity of crime fiction, including suspense, curiosity and learning about investigations, and states that these programmes are a good source of entertainment. The Netflix example and the point about personal safety help make the discussion relevant. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others. The claim that dramas can educate viewers is repeated in several forms, while the opinion about violent scenes and their effect on young people is introduced briefly and not developed. To strengthen the response, explain how or why these effects occur and make the personal evaluation more specific, for example by distinguishing between realistic educational content and sensationalised violence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, paragraphs beginning with “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Lastly,” and a concluding summary. This makes the main stages of the argument easy to follow. Some connections between sentences are less successful, however. The opening of the first body paragraph, “the main reason … because,” is not a complete, well-linked sentence, and “Which means” is separated from the example it refers to. The final body paragraph also repeats reasons already discussed rather than clearly extending the argument. Use linking phrases to show whether a point is an example, consequence or contrast, and ensure each paragraph develops a distinct main idea with clear references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “suspense,” “investigation,” “personal safety” and “violent scenes,” and attempts to express several different reasons for the genre’s appeal. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “suspence,” “mysterios,” “curiosty,” “entaitainment” and “intrested.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “attract the audience attraction” and “show curiosity to watch.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common word partnerships, such as “hold the audience’s attention” and “make viewers curious.” A wider set of precise terms for suspense, investigation and audience appeal would also reduce repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex forms, including “because” clauses, “as long as” and the contrast introduced by “However.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but sentence construction and agreement are not consistently controlled. For example, “the main reason … because it contains” is an incomplete construction, while “crime TV dramas also helps” has a subject–verb agreement error. “Which means that…” is also a sentence fragment, and the final sentence needs a clearer grammatical structure around “watch … responsibly.” Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and punctuation when joining clauses. More accurate control of these patterns would make the argument easier to read.
