Student answer (Band 5.5)

The popularity of crime novels and TV crime dramas are increasing nowadays in different countries. In my opinion, these books and TV shows are getting popular because people are loving the entertainment bringing by these fictions.

I think that these books and TV shows are becoming more popular because they are entertaining. For example, people reading crime books and watching TV crime dramas give people excitement, they tend to spend too much of their time watching and reading, to know what will happen at the end of stories. In addition, they are amazed by how good the writer, to create such stories that people think they are the protagonist of the stories.

In my view, these crime fictions and TV crime dramas are not good to watch by everyone, because some might think that they can also do those crimes that they watched. For instance, young adults that have been addicted on watching those kind of stories, without proper guidance, may encourage them to do such crimes like they have been watching. Therefore, it is important that there are proper label, showing that those kind of stories must have guidance or approval from their parents before they can watch or read those.

In conclusion, despite of increasing popularity of crime novels and dramas in different countries, even if they can bring entertainment to everyone. authors must give warnings to the consumers that such stories are just fictional and must not be recreate in real life scenarios. Although, parents or adults are the one who are responsible of their actions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain popularity through entertainment and suspense, and give your view that crime fiction may be unsuitable for some viewers without guidance. The examples about wanting to discover how stories end and young adults imitating crimes are relevant. However, the explanation of popularity is developed more clearly than your opinion: the possible influence on young adults is asserted rather than supported with a specific example or explanation of how imitation might occur. Your conclusion also introduces warnings and parental responsibility without fully clarifying whether you consider crime dramas generally worthwhile or harmful. Develop both sides of your response more evenly and state your overall position consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining popularity, a paragraph presenting concerns, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “For example,” “In addition,” and “Therefore” help show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the popularity paragraph, “people reading crime books and watching TV crime dramas give people excitement” repeats “people” and makes the relationship awkward. The conclusion begins “despite of increasing popularity” and then adds “even if,” leaving the contrast difficult to follow. Referencing such as “those kind of stories” is also not always clear or grammatically consistent. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make the conclusion follow directly from your stated opinion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “crime novels,” “protagonist,” “proper guidance,” and “fictional,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts to express more specific ideas, such as viewers being “amazed” by the writer’s work. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “entertainment bringing by these fictions,” “addicted on watching,” and “proper label.” Repetition of “popular,” “stories,” and “crimes” also limits flexibility. Choose more natural combinations—for example, “entertained by these stories,” “addicted to watching,” and “age-rating labels”—and vary how you describe suspense and audience appeal. These improvements would make your vocabulary more precise and idiomatic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “because,” “that,” and “although,” and the main ideas can usually be followed. However, some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “The popularity … are increasing” needs subject–verb agreement, while “the writer, to create such stories” does not form a complete grammatical structure. In “may encourage them to do such crimes,” the subject and reference are unclear, and the final sentence, “Although, parents or adults are the one who are responsible of their actions,” is incomplete and contains agreement problems. Practise building complete sentences around one clear subject and checking verb forms and punctuation, especially in longer clauses.
