Student answer (Band 6.0)

In various parts of the world, novels and TV dramas related to crime are becoming increasingly popular. There are several reasons for this trend including a compelling storyline and general awareness to the public.

Firstly, such stories are highly appreciated by all the audience due to the nature of story telling and the suspense which is included in the whole story. This genre starts with presenting a crime which is then followed by a thorough investigation. During the whole story, there is always a bigger suspense which is disclosed in the end after the story takes various turns. In the mean time, viwers always analyse the factors and try to come up with the solved mystery which makes this genre more compelling and connecting. For example, many drama series often organise online events for the followers to take participate in the breakdown of the story and predict the final conclusion.

Additionally, such series provide awareness to the public that how can crimes happen and to take the necessary actions in advance. To better portray these stories, the created crime scenes can be inspired by real incidents or they can be self planned. Moreover, thses are created in such a manner so that the viewers can easily follow them and they generally involve a city or a neighbourhood. Also, the scenes are filmed in the household using the simple objects and simple techniques. All of these can be well known by individuals but the outcomes may never be expected. Therefore, such stories makes them aware that how a small thing from their household can be used to harm them.

In my opinion, where the novels and plays of such genre are highly liked by the public, they are also very useful in spreading awareness.

In conclusion, while the usefulness and popularity of these stories makes them a worth watching, these should be thoroughly analysed before broadcasting and the minimum age should also be declared so that they do not upset the minors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain popularity through suspense and audience participation, and you give a positive view of the genre, noting its potential to raise awareness. The discussion of viewers predicting the ending is relevant and supported with an example of online events. However, the awareness argument is less clearly developed: the claim that crime stories teach people how household objects can be used to harm them is not fully connected to practical prevention. Your opinion is also brief and qualified mainly in the conclusion, where you call for age guidance and careful broadcasting. Make your position clearer earlier and explain more fully how the genre benefits or concerns viewers.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with separate paragraphs for suspense, public awareness, your opinion, and the conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages, and the example about online audience events supports the first reason. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the stronger progression associated with the next level. However, links within the awareness paragraph are sometimes difficult to follow: the movement from real or invented crime scenes to household filming and then to possible harm is not made explicit. Some transitions, including “Also” and “Therefore,” feel mechanical. Use clearer cause-and-effect links and refer back to ideas with precise wording.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “suspense,” “thorough investigation,” “crime scenes,” and “broadcasting,” which allows you to discuss the subject clearly. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “predict the final conclusion.” However, several word-choice and collocation problems make the expression less natural, for example “general awareness to the public,” “take participate,” and “a worth watching.” Spelling slips such as “viwers” and “thses” also reduce accuracy. The range is adequate, but control of common combinations is inconsistent. Learn useful phrases as complete units and check spelling and word forms during proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses (“which is then followed by a thorough investigation”) and a conditional structure (“so that they do not upset the minors”). Most ideas remain understandable, and the errors do not generally prevent communication. Some grammatical problems persist, however: “how can crimes happen” needs indirect-question word order, while “such stories makes them aware” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “Additionally” also has an unclear construction around “provide awareness … that how.” Review indirect questions, agreement, and sentence boundaries, and aim to make complex sentences accurate before adding further complexity.
