Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's modern society, crime novels and television crime dramas are becoming extensively popular in many parts of the world. This essay will provide the reasons behind this scenario and will also state my opinion against popularity of crime fiction and TV crime dramas.
There are numerous reasons supporting the popularity of criminal novels and dramas. Firstly, many people enjoy thrilling stories. Very few audience prefer to watch and read comedy series, most of them tend to read crime fictions because it provides them thrilling experience as they can imagine the whole script written in novels. Watching criminal dramas lets them experience real life scenarios because most of these dramas are based on true stories and events. Secondly, people can aware themselves about expected dangers. As they get to know about different incidents happening around the world, they can aware each other regarding precautions needed against possible dangers.
Moving towards my opinion, I am completely against the increasing popularity of these criminal novels and dramas because there many criminals who watch and read these stories so that they can get ideas to commit crimes without getting caught. As these stories state every detail of commiting a crime without leaving a clue behind. Moreover, some psycho killers feel proud as their crime stories get published and the fear among society triggers them to commit further crimes.
Taking everything into consideration, Although crime stories and novels are becoming famous among many people around the world, I am not in favour of this popularity as there are many possible threats to the society as a whole because many criminals get inspiration from these stories and publishing real events can speard more fear among members of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you give reasons for the popularity of crime fiction and state a clear negative opinion. The reasons—enjoyment of suspense and learning about possible dangers—are relevant, and you explain your concern that criminals might imitate methods described in stories. However, some points are asserted more than developed. For example, the claim that most people prefer crime fiction to comedy is broad and unsupported, while the idea that stories help people take precautions could use a specific illustration. Your opinion is clear, but the argument would be more convincing if you acknowledged why audiences find these programmes appealing before explaining why you believe their risks outweigh the benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining popularity, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Moving towards my opinion” make the stages explicit. This coherent arrangement meets the lower-band expectations, with some evidence of more flexible organisation. However, several transitions feel formulaic, and the conclusion largely repeats the opinion and reasons already given. Connections within the second paragraph could also be clearer: the shift from enjoying thrilling stories to learning precautions is abrupt. Use more precise referencing and link each explanation directly to the point it supports, rather than relying mainly on fixed transition phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “thrilling experience,” “precautions,” “possible dangers,” and “inspiration,” and you attempt some less common expressions. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision. For instance, “criminal novels” is less natural than “crime novels,” and “aware themselves” does not express the intended meaning; “make themselves aware” or “learn about” would be clearer. “Extensively popular” and “against popularity” are also awkward combinations. Spelling errors such as “commiting” and “speard” further reduce accuracy. Aim to use a smaller set of precise, natural topic phrases and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “as,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Watching criminal dramas lets them experience real life scenarios,” but errors recur in agreement, verb patterns, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Very few audience prefer” needs a plural noun and matching verb, while “there many criminals” is missing a verb. The sentence beginning “As these stories state every detail” is a fragment, and “Although” is incorrectly capitalised after the opening comma in the conclusion. Work on complete sentence boundaries and check subject–verb agreement and article use while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
