Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, detective novels and crime television series have gained significant popularity in many countries and have attracted considerable attention. This situation raises important questions regarding the reasons behind this recognition and my point of view on this argument. This essay will address these issues in turn.

One of the main reasons is curiosity. Instead of watching love dramas, the modern generation prefers to read or watch adventure dramas or series. Because youngsters have curiosity about how inspectors catch the shooter, and what investigation they do. For example, one of the well-known shows is CID, which describes how they use tiny hairs or saliva for DNA testing. As a result, they can find the person responsible. Those unexpected twists and surprising endings attract audiences. Moreover, another contributing factor is real-life awareness. The shows can help people understand criminal behavior and investigations.

In my opinion, crime fiction and TV crime dramas are very entertaining and interesting. Viewers try to guess who committed the crime. Furthermore, individuals can learn tips on what they should do if such circumstances occur. However, watching too much crime-related content might affect mental health, leading to fear or anxiety in some people. Also, some shows present investigations inaccurately; therefore, excessive violent content may be disturbing. Overall, I believe these shows are enjoyable as long as people watch them in moderation without watching too many episodes.

In conclusion, dramas become interesting due to suspense. At the same time, awareness among citizens through TV shows and novels plays a crucial role in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: curiosity and awareness are offered as reasons for the genre’s popularity, and you give a balanced personal view, noting both entertainment and possible anxiety or disturbing content. The CID example helps illustrate how investigations can interest viewers. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that crime programmes create “real-life awareness” would be stronger with a specific example of what viewers learn, while the contrast with “love dramas” is not clearly connected to why crime stories appeal. Your opinion is clear, but developing these ideas with more precise explanations and examples would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, a paragraph on popularity, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “However” help signal relationships. The organisation is therefore easy to follow. At times, though, connections feel mechanical or abrupt: “Because youngsters have curiosity…” is a sentence fragment following the previous point, and the conclusion repeats suspense and awareness without drawing together the main reasons and your qualified opinion. Some references, such as “this recognition” and “these issues,” are also rather general. Use complete sentences and make transitions show the precise relationship between each claim and its support.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “investigation,” “DNA testing,” “unexpected twists,” “criminal behavior,” and “excessive violent content.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “in moderation” express your position effectively. There are also attempts at more formal wording, including “contributing factor” and “plays a crucial role.” However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “my point of view on this argument,” “adventure dramas” for crime programmes, and “what investigation they do.” Repetition of general words such as “interesting” and “shows” limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary your references to crime fiction, series, and programmes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “However, watching too much crime-related content might affect mental health, leading to fear or anxiety in some people.” The conditional idea in “as long as people watch them in moderation” is also effective. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “Because youngsters have curiosity…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “what investigation they do” has an awkward question structure. The sentence beginning “Instead of watching love dramas…” is also followed by a fragment beginning “Because.” Work on joining dependent clauses to complete main clauses and forming indirect questions accurately, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
