Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people are becoming big fans of crime thrillers and TV dramas; they really like watching those shows, and crime novels are also very popular with all kinds of people, whether young or old. In today's world, people are, in general, more curious about other people's lives. I believe that they do this because of their human tendency to take interest in other people's business. In the following paragraphs, I will explain why these things are highly famous among folks and also include my opinion.

The first reason which I can think of is: There are numerous options in the entertainment industry for people but people can be easily bored by those type of programs. However, these shows can hold the audience's interest till last, eventually giving the show the highest watch rating. In that way, it is also profitable for companies that are making this kind of dramas. Hence, they are continuously making more and more serials like that. Same for books, as many individuals prefer reading books and they are cautious about their screen time. Moreover, especially for those folks, writers write those twisted, interesting stories that simply keep their interest.

I am personally quite fond of these series. I prefer to watch these with my friends; for instance, we are watching a murder case, and we are suspecting a killer if they guess a name and it doesn't turn out to be the criminal, whoever guesses it wins. These kinds of series engage us and give us family time and also reduce boredom. Furthermore, it is definitely a good source of entertainment and different from common romcoms.

In conclusion, they are getting the recognition that they deserve. I believe investing time and diligence in these types of projects is necessary, and they are just worth receiving the applause for it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it suggests that crime stories hold viewers’ attention and appeal to readers who prefer books, then gives a personal view that these programmes are enjoyable and provide shared entertainment. The example of guessing the killer with friends makes the opinion more concrete. However, the explanation of popularity is not fully developed: curiosity about other people’s lives is mentioned in the introduction but not clearly connected to crime fiction, and the point about companies producing more dramas focuses on profitability rather than why audiences are drawn to them. The final claim that the genre “deserve[s]” recognition is also broad. Develop the reasons with clearer links to suspense, solving mysteries, or emotional engagement, and explain your evaluation more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, a paragraph explaining popularity, a separate paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the response. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. For example, “Same for books” is an abrupt transition, while “In that way” does not precisely show how audience interest leads to high ratings and company profits. The conclusion also introduces “investing time and diligence” without a clear link to the preceding discussion. Use more precise referencing and transitions, and make sure each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “crime thrillers,” “murder case,” “criminal,” “screen time,” and “source of entertainment.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “hold the audience’s interest” communicate a relevant idea. However, several expressions are informal, repetitive, or imprecise for an IELTS essay: “folks,” “big fans,” “highly famous,” and “common romcoms.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “highest watch rating” and “worth receiving the applause.” Aim for more precise collocations and a consistently neutral register. Replacing general phrases with language about suspense, audience appeal, or critical recognition would make the argument sound more controlled and specific.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and complex sentence forms, such as the relative clause in “stories that simply keep their interest” and the conditional structure in “if they guess a name and it doesn’t turn out to be the criminal.” Most sentences remain understandable, and grammatical errors rarely obscure the intended meaning. Some sentence construction and punctuation are less controlled: the colon after “is” in “The first reason which I can think of is:” is unnecessary, and “we are watching a murder case, and we are suspecting a killer” uses progressive forms awkwardly for describing a viewing activity and a guess. The sentence beginning “Same for books” is also incomplete. Work on complete sentence structures, natural tense choices, and punctuation while continuing to use varied clauses.
